Squealing when you start it? Clicking when you turn? Both are cheap to fix now and expensive to ignore.
One rubber belt drives your alternator, your AC, usually your power steering, and on a lot of engines, the water pump. When it snaps, everything on that list stops at once: battery light on, steering goes heavy, and if the pump's on that belt, the temperature gauge starts climbing before you find a place to pull over. A belt that's squealing or cracked is telling you it's close.
CV axles are the same story on a different corner of the car. That rhythmic clicking when you turn out of your street is the outer joint running dry, it'll click for a while, then one day it lets go. Both jobs are exactly what I exist for: straightforward driveway work, done at your place, flat-quoted before I start.
Cracked, glazed, or squealing on cold starts. One belt runs the alternator, AC and power steering, when it goes, they all go. Swapped and routed correctly in under an hour at your place.
$150–$300A new belt on a tired tensioner squeals again within a month. If the tensioner is weak or the pulley bearing is humming, I tell you before I fit the belt, one visit, fixed properly.
$180–$350Clicking on turns means the joint is worn, replaced with a quality unit, torqued to spec, at your home or work. Front axles on most cars and SUVs are an afternoon job in the driveway.
$350–$700A torn boot slings its grease out and lets road grit in, that's what kills the joint. Catch it before the clicking starts and sometimes the boot alone saves the axle.
$160–$280If the belt already snapped, the car isn't going anywhere, and that's fine, because I come to it. Belt, tensioner and axle work needs hand tools and a jack, not a hoist, which makes these jobs perfect driveway repairs. You skip the tow, the shuttle, and the waiting room.
Don't let anyone spray "belt dressing" on a squealing belt, it quiets it for a week and cooks the rubber. A squeal that fades as the engine warms up is usually a glazed belt or a lazy tensioner, not "just moisture." I check the tensioner on every belt job, because a new belt on a weak tensioner is a comeback waiting to happen, and I don't do comebacks.
On CV axles: clicking only on full-lock turns is the outer joint, and that diagnosis is pretty safe. A clunk in a straight line is a different conversation, could be an inner joint, could be suspension, so I road test before I sell you an axle. And axle quality matters more than people think: the bargain-bin units often vibrate at highway speed right out of the box. I fit parts I'd put on my own car, and you keep the old axle so you can see exactly what the joint looked like inside.
One more: if your belt drives the water pump and it snaps, you have minutes of driving before the engine overheats, not kilometres. Pull over, shut it off, and text me where the car is. That situation is exactly what a mobile mechanic is for.
Wonderful and quick experience, charged me way less than the dealer and he did the work in my driveway in the cold. I really appreciate all the hard work. . Verified Google review · 5.0 ★
Fares came by and did the brakes on my 2021 Lexus RX350. I got quoted way more at a shop so I decided to try a mobile mechanic instead. He showed up on time, did the work in my driveway, and everything went smoothly. . Verified Google review · 5.0 ★
Both get worse, and both are cheapest the week you notice them. Available Mo-Sa, 8am to 7pm.
