Wonderful and quick experience, charged me way less than the dealer and he did the work in my driveway in the cold. I really appreciate all the hard work. . Verified Google review · 5.0 ★
Fares came by and did the brakes on my 2021 Lexus RX350. I got quoted way more at a shop so I decided to try a mobile mechanic instead. He showed up on time, did the work in my driveway, and everything went smoothly. . Verified Google review · 5.0 ★

"I Have the Serpentine Belt. Can You Install It?"

By Fares · Updated August 17, 2026 · 4 min read · Mobile. Mississauga, Oakville, Milton

The straight answer: Yes, a serpentine belt is one of the quickest, most driveway-friendly jobs there is, and if you've got the belt it's essentially labour only. Send me the belt's part number and your car and you'll have a flat number before booking. The one thing worth saying: a belt that squeals or shredded usually had help. A seizing tensioner, a worn idler pulley or a failing accessory bearing eats belts, and fitting a new belt onto the thing that killed the old one just buys you a few months. I check the tensioner and pulleys as part of the job and show you what I find. Cars With Fares comes to your driveway across Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, Brampton and Etobicoke, get a flat quote or text 647-450-0406.

Text beats a form if you're on your phone, the message above is already written, you just add your car. He reads texts between jobs.

The serpentine belt drives your alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor off one loop of rubber. When it goes, you lose several systems at once, which is why a belt is a small part with an outsized ability to strand you. It's also genuinely one of the easiest parts to buy correctly and one of the fastest jobs to have done.

I'm Fares, a mobile mechanic working across Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, Brampton and Etobicoke. Belts are quick on-site work: tension released, old belt off, routing verified against the diagram, new belt on, tensioner and pulleys spun and listened to. The listening is the part that matters, it's how you find out whether the belt was the problem or the victim.

Here's what to confirm about your belt, why the tensioner gets checked, and how to get your labour number in one text.

What the same job costs full-service at a shop (2026)

You've bought the belt, so this is the full-service version for context, honest GTA shop and dealer ranges with the part included. When you supply it, what's left is labour, and you get that number flat before any work:

ScenarioWhat's involvedTypical GTA shop/dealer cost
Serpentine belt onlyQuality belt, routing verified, tensioner checked, full-service$150 – $350
Belt + tensionerBelt plus complete tensioner assembly$300 – $550
Belt + tensioner + idler pulleyFull accessory-drive refresh in one labour charge$350 – $650
Why the ranges are wide. This is the most affordable family on the whole site, and the belt itself is a small slice of it, so supplying your own moves the number less here than on a big part like an alternator. What it does buy you is certainty: you know exactly what belt went on. If the tensioner or an idler turns out to be the actual problem, doing it in the same visit is one labour charge instead of two, and I'll show you why before you decide. Holding a quote already? And what do I charge?

Fair question, it's the one nobody answers. Here's my published band beside the market's, so you can see both before you talk to anybody:

What I charge, and what the market charges
GTA shops & dealers $150–$650

The full spread from the table above, smallest scenario to biggest. Market context so you can tell fair from silly, not my price, and I have no say in what a shop bills.

Cars With Fares, published, flat Labour only, flat, before any work

The part is already yours, so there's no parts line at all. I check it fits your car for free, then give you one flat labour number by text before I touch anything. For reference, my published band for this job including the part is $150–$650 installed.

Serpentine belt only$150–$350
Belt + tensioner$300–$550
Belt + tensioner + idler pulley$350–$650
Read the two columns properly: they overlap, and I'm not claiming to be the low-price option. What's different is how you get quoted. A shop bills you per line item, usually after the car is already on the hoist. I give you one flat number for the whole job, parts and labour together, before any work starts, at your driveway. No hourly meter, nothing added afterwards, and if something doesn't need doing I tell you that instead of billing it. My numbers are published at /data/consumer-rate-card.json (updated 2026-07-19) so you can check them against this page, your car and the job's scope decide where in the band you land.

What actually drives the price up or down

When two people pay wildly different amounts for the "same" job, these are the reasons, and they're the reasons your flat quote lands where it lands:

Whether the tensioner or an idler pulley is the real culprit

A belt that squeals, chirps or shredded is often reporting on something else. A tensioner losing its spring, an idler pulley with a dry bearing, or a misaligned pulley chews through belts. I spin and listen to each pulley with the belt off, that check costs nothing extra and it's the difference between a fix and a rerun in three months.

The right belt: length, rib count and routing

Belt length and rib count vary by engine and by whether your car has air conditioning. A near-fit either won't tension properly or will track off the pulleys. Photograph the part number and send it with your engine size and I'll confirm it before we book, while the belt is still returnable.

How crowded the belt route is on your engine

Some belts are a two-minute swap with a long ratchet on the tensioner. Others need an engine mount supported, a fan shroud out, or a wheel-well liner removed to reach the tensioner bolt at all. That access is the labour, and it's why the number comes per car.

Whether anything the belt drives is also failing

A grinding or whining noise that seemed like the belt can be an alternator bearing, a water pump bearing or a power-steering pump on the way out. If one of those is the source, a new belt quietens nothing. I'd rather find that with the belt off and tell you, than fit your belt and let you discover it on the drive.

Before I fit it: what's worth confirming

How urgent is it?

MEDIUM, cheap to fix now, expensive to have snap on the highway

A cracked or squealing belt is drivable in the short term, but be clear about what a snapped belt means: you lose the alternator, the power steering pump, the air conditioning and, on many engines, the water pump all at once. That's a dead battery, heavy steering and a rising temperature gauge in the same minute. It's a small job now and a roadside problem later, and with the belt already bought there's no reason to leave it.

How the flat quote works at your driveway

No shop bay, no waiting room, no "while we're in there" upsell. I come to your driveway or workplace lot, confirm what your car actually needs, and give you one flat number before any work starts, parts and labour, no surprises. If something doesn't need doing, I tell you that too; the trust is worth more to me than the extra line item. I handle mobile belt and accessory-drive repair across Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, Brampton and Etobicoke.

What to do next

  1. 1Photograph the part-number label and send it with your year, make, model and engine size.
  2. 2Tell me what you're hearing, a squeal at startup, a chirp that comes and goes, or a belt that already shredded.
  3. 3Look at the old belt if you can: cracks, glazing or missing ribs are useful information.
  4. 4You get a flat labour number back, then pick a window and I come to the car.
  5. 5I check the tensioner and every pulley with the belt off and show you anything that's on its way out, your call whether it gets done.

Frequently asked questions

Will you fit a serpentine belt I bought myself?

Yes, it's quick, driveway-friendly work. Send me the part number plus your year, make, model and engine size and you'll get a flat labour number back. I check fitment free first, because belt length and rib count vary by engine and by whether the car has air conditioning. My labour is warrantied by me; the belt's warranty stays with the seller.

Do I need a new tensioner with the belt?

Only if the tensioner has earned it, and I'll show you rather than assert it. A tensioner losing its spring tension or a pulley with a dry, noisy bearing is a leading cause of belts that squeal or shred early, and fitting a new belt onto one of those just resets the countdown. I spin and listen to every pulley with the belt off, and if something's going, doing it in the same visit is one labour charge instead of two.

Why is my belt squealing even though it looks fine?

Three usual suspects. A tensioner that's weak, so the belt slips under load. A misaligned or dry idler pulley. Or a glazed belt, the ribs go shiny and hard and stop gripping even though they look intact. A quick test: if a light mist of water on the running belt changes the noise, the belt or its tension is the issue; if the noise doesn't change, look at a bearing in something the belt drives.

What happens if my serpentine belt snaps while driving?

You lose everything it drives at once, the alternator stops charging, the power steering goes heavy, the air conditioning quits, and on many engines the water pump stops so the temperature starts climbing immediately. The car will run for a short distance on battery alone, but the honest advice is to get off the road promptly rather than push on. It's a small job to prevent and a bad afternoon to experience.

How long does a belt take to change?

On many engines it's genuinely fast, release the tensioner, slip the old one off, route the new one, done. On others the tensioner is behind an engine mount or a wheel-well liner and it takes real time to reach. That's why the labour is quoted per car once I know your engine, instead of a single number on a page that would be wrong for half the people reading it.
