Safe to drive? No. Once the belt is gone you have no alternator, heavy steering on most cars, and on a lot of engines no water pump, which means the temperature climbs within minutes and an overheated engine is a vastly bigger bill than a belt. Get it off the road and shut it down. If the temperature gauge has already gone into the red, don't restart it to move it a bit further. That's the moment a cheap job becomes an expensive one.
What just stopped working, and why you stop driving
One belt on the front of the engine drives most of the things that keep the car civilised. When it goes, they all go at once, which is why the dashboard lights up like a slot machine and people assume something catastrophic happened.
Here's what you lose the moment it snaps, and it explains the urgency better than any warning could.
- The alternator. The car is now running on battery alone. You have a limited window before the engine dies wherever it happens to be, often less than you'd hope, at night with the lights on.
- The water pump, on many engines. This is the one that matters. If the belt drives the pump, coolant stops circulating immediately and the temperature climbs fast. Overheating warps things that cost far more than any belt.
- The power steering pump on cars that still use one. The steering doesn't lock, but it becomes very heavy very suddenly, which is startling at low speed in a parking lot.
- Air conditioning, which is the least of your problems but the one people notice first in July.
- A shredded belt taking things with it. Loose belt debris can whip into wiring, hoses and covers on the way out, occasionally turning one job into two.
What actually causes them to break
The instinct is to blame old rubber. Sometimes that's fair, belts do age, crack and glaze, and one that's never been changed on a high-mileage car has earned its retirement. But a belt that snaps outright, especially a fairly recent one, usually had help.
The real causes, roughly in order:
- A worn tensioner. The tensioner keeps the belt at the right tightness through a spring or damper. When it weakens, the belt flutters, slips, heats up and chews itself apart. This is the single most common reason a belt fails early, and it is why replacing only the belt so often ends with a second failure.
- A seizing idler or tensioner pulley bearing. A pulley that no longer spins freely grinds the belt away or grabs it. You can often hear this one coming as a whirring, growling or rumbling noise from the front of the engine that changes with revs.
- A failing accessory. An alternator, water pump, A/C compressor or power steering pump whose own bearing is on the way out drags on the belt and destroys it. If a belt fails and the cause isn't found, the new one dies the same way.
- Oil or coolant on the belt. A leak from a valve cover or a weeping pump contaminates the rubber, which then slips, glazes and shreds. The leak has to be dealt with or the belt is a consumable.
- Misalignment. A pulley that's been fitted slightly off, or a mount that's moved, makes the belt track badly and fray at one edge. A frayed edge on an otherwise fine belt is a strong clue.
- Genuine age. Cracks across the ribs, a shiny glazed surface, or chunks missing. Ontario winters and heat cycling don't help.
Warning signs you get beforehand
Belts rarely go without notice. The signs are just easy to explain away.
A squeal on a cold start that fades after a minute is the classic early one, that's the belt slipping before everything warms and grips. A squeal that appears when you turn the wheel or switch on the air conditioning is the same story under load. A rumble, growl or whirring from the front of the engine that rises with revs is usually a pulley bearing, and that's the one that ends in a snapped belt.
Visually, look at the ribbed side. Fine cracks running across the ribs are normal wear once there are a lot of them; chunks missing between ribs, a shiny glazed face, or fraying along one edge are not. And if there's oil anywhere near it, the belt's lifespan is already being decided by the leak.
Any of that is worth dealing with while the car is in your driveway rather than on the shoulder of a highway.
What the fix should involve
The job itself is straightforward and is exactly the kind of thing done where the car sits. What separates a fix from a rerun is whether anyone finds out why the old belt died.
A proper repair means spinning every pulley by hand with the belt off, feeling for roughness or play, checking the tensioner's movement and damping rather than just looking at it, checking alignment across the pulleys, and finding any oil leak that's been feeding the belt. If the tensioner or an idler is the culprit, replacing them together with the belt is not an upsell, it's the actual repair. Fitting a belt onto a dying tensioner just buys you a few months and another roadside stop.
If the belt drove the water pump and the engine got hot before you stopped, that needs checking on its own merits before the car goes back into service.

How far can I drive with a broken serpentine belt?
Treat the answer as zero. Two things are running out at once: the battery, because the alternator has stopped charging, and on many engines the coolant circulation, because that belt drives the water pump. The battery gives you a few kilometres of warning. The overheating gives you far less, and an engine that overheats badly costs many times what the belt job would have. There's no version of this where continuing to drive is the cheaper decision, pull over, shut it off, and have it dealt with where it stopped.
Is the serpentine belt the same as the timing belt?
No, and it's an important distinction. The serpentine belt is on the outside of the engine and drives accessories like the alternator, water pump, power steering and A/C. The timing belt is inside a cover and keeps the engine's internals synchronised. A snapped serpentine belt strands you; on many engines a snapped timing belt destroys the engine. They're different parts, different jobs and very different bills. Why did my belt break again after it was just replaced?
Almost always because the cause was never found. The belt is usually the victim, not the culprit. A weak tensioner lets the belt flutter and slip until it destroys itself; a seizing idler or a failing alternator or pump bearing grinds it away; an oil leak contaminates it so it slips and glazes. Fit a fresh belt into any of those situations and you've reset the clock, not fixed anything. A second failure in a short time is strong evidence that the tensioner and pulleys were never properly checked, and that's where I'd look first.
What does a failing belt sound like before it goes?

A squeal, high-pitched, worst on a cold start, often louder when you turn the wheel or switch on the air conditioning, is the belt slipping, which points at belt condition or tension. Can this be done in my driveway?
Yes, belts, tensioners and idler pulleys are standard driveway work and there's no reason to move the car for it. It's also the sensible way to handle a car that's already stopped, since the alternative is paying to tow a vehicle to a shop for a job that doesn't need a hoist.
