Safe to drive? Usually yes, for now. A squeal from a wear indicator means the pads are announcing the end, not that they quit today. The bang deserves more respect, because a loose caliper is a brake problem and a worn ball joint is a control problem. If the bang is getting louder week over week, or the steering has started to feel loose or wandery, stop guessing and get hands on it. If the squeak has turned into a grind when you press the pedal, that is metal on metal, and the job got more expensive today, not someday.
Why this is usually two problems, not one
People hear both noises in the same week and assume something big let go. Almost never. Listen to when each one happens and they separate themselves: the squeak shows up when you press the brake pedal, the bang shows up when the suspension moves over a bump, worst mid-turn. Different pedal, different system.
The reason they arrive together is boring and very Ontario. Salt and stop-and-go age brake pads and suspension joints on roughly the same schedule, so a car that's due for pads is often due for a sway bar link in the same season. Two small problems, one noisy car.
The good news is that neither noise, on its own, usually means the scary version. But you do have to split them properly, because the fix for one does nothing for the other. Plenty of people have paid for brakes and kept the bang.
The squeak: what brakes say as pads wear down
Brake squeal is the pad talking. What it's saying depends on the flavour:
- The wear indicator. A small steel tab bolted to the pad that touches the rotor when the friction material gets thin. It is designed to squeal, constantly, sometimes even off the brakes, so you book the job before grinding starts. This is the most common cause and it means pads soon, not panic now.
- Morning rust squeal. Rotors flash-rust overnight in our humidity. The first few stops of the day scrape it off and the noise fades. Normal, costs nothing.
- Glazed pads or missing hardware. Overheated pads go shiny and sing, and pads missing their shims or anti-rattle clips vibrate against the caliper. Both squeal with plenty of pad left, which is why a look beats a guess.
- Grinding. Not a squeak anymore. That's the pad backing plate machining your rotor every time you stop, and it turns a pads-only job into pads and rotors.
The bang: what knocks on right turns over bumps
A knock that needs a bump plus a turn is a loaded-joint noise. Turn right and the body leans onto the left side of the car while the right side unloads. Any worn joint changes its load mid-corner, and a worn one announces it. Hit a bump at the same moment and the suspension is moving through its travel under that shifted weight, which is exactly when sloppy parts hammer.
One honest wrinkle: the noise does not always come from the side you'd guess, which is why I confirm with hands, not ears. The usual culprits, in the order I actually find them:
- Sway bar end links. The number one answer. Two small ball joints on a thin rod, living in salt spray. Worn ones rattle and bang over bumps and change their tune mid-turn as the bar loads and unloads.
- Control arm bushings. Cracked or torn rubber lets the arm shift and clunk, worst on sharp, slow turns over broken pavement, which describes most plaza entrances in Mississauga.
- Loose caliper hardware. The brake system can bang too. A caliper bracket bolt that's backed off, or pads sliding in a worn bracket, makes a single hard clunk over bumps and when you first brake after reversing.
- Strut mounts and ball joints. Less common, more serious. A knocking ball joint is the one I do not let people sit on, because its failure mode is the wheel leaning out of position.
How I split them in your driveway
This takes minutes with the wheel off and it beats an hour of theorizing from the driver's seat. Pads get measured, not eyeballed through the spokes. The rotor edge tells me its history. Caliper bolts get checked because a loose bracket mimics a suspension knock perfectly.
Then the suspension side: grab the sway bar link and shake it, any click or free play is your answer. Pry the control arm bushings and watch for movement the rubber shouldn't allow. Rock the wheel top and bottom for ball joint and bearing play. Each test points at one specific part, which is how you avoid paying for a parts-cannon.
One more honesty note: if a control arm has to come out, the toe angle changes and the car needs an alignment after. Alignment machines live in shops, so I set the toe close by measurement and you book the alignment within the week. I'd rather tell you that upfront than pretend it isn't part of the job.

Why does the banging only happen when I turn right?
