Safe to drive? Depends entirely on which cause you have. If the pedal feels normal and firm and the level crept down slowly over months, you're almost certainly looking at worn pads. Drive gently and book the brake job now. If the level is dropping fast, if you've already topped it up once and it's low again, or if the pedal feels soft, low, or sinks while you hold it at a light, treat the car as parked. A hydraulic leak can take the pedal away with very little warning. Brake fluid is the only connection between your foot and the wheels. It gets the benefit of zero doubt.
Why the level drops when nothing is leaking
This is the part almost nobody explains, and it's why the warning is genuinely useful instead of just scary. As your pads wear thin, the caliper pistons ride further out to keep the pads against the rotor. Fluid leaves the reservoir to fill the space behind those pistons. The system isn't losing a drop, it's just redistributing it, and the reservoir is where you see the accounting.
That's why a slow drop over months usually means one thing: your pads are getting thin, all four corners together. The reservoir is effectively a pad gauge you can read from the engine bay. It's also why the level jumps right back up after a brake job, because pressing the pistons home returns all that fluid.
Same logic in reverse: never top the reservoir to the brim on an older set of pads. When the pistons get pushed back during the next brake job, that fluid needs somewhere to go, and the somewhere becomes your paint. Brake fluid strips paint enthusiastically.
Topping it up and moving on is the wrong move
The warning is a message. Topping up deletes the message without reading it. Either the pads are worn, in which case they're still worn and now the gauge is blinded, or there's a leak, in which case the leak is still there and you've bought yourself a soft pedal at the worst possible moment instead of in your driveway.
If you do add fluid to get through the week, two rules. Use exactly the type printed on the reservoir cap, nothing else, because the wrong fluid ruins seals through the whole system. And treat the second top-up as an alarm: fluid that needs replacing twice is going somewhere, and brake fluid doesn't evaporate.
There's also the age question. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over the years, which quietly lowers its boiling point and rusts lines from the inside. If your reservoir looks like cold tea instead of light honey, mention it when you book the brake work. Fresh fluid is a legitimate part of the job, not an upsell.
How to tell a leak from ordinary wear
You can do most of this in your driveway in five minutes, no tools:
- Look at the inside face of each wheel. A caliper or wheel-cylinder leak throws fluid onto the wheel's inner surface. A wet, oily streak on one wheel and not the others is a finding.
- Look at where you park. Brake fluid ranges from nearly clear to honey coloured. It feels slick, doesn't smell like fuel, and doesn't dry up like water. A patch near any wheel, or along the car's spine where the rear lines run, matters.
- Feel the pedal, engine running. Firm and high is what you want. Soft, spongy, low, or slowly sinking under steady foot pressure is hydraulic trouble, full stop.
- Think about the car's age. Steel brake lines live under the car in salt spray, and in Ontario they rust through where they run along the body. Rubber hoses crack near the wheels. Fifteen-plus winters of brine is exactly when these start letting go.
- No visible leak doesn't fully clear it. A master cylinder can leak internally, into the brake booster behind it, where the fluid hides. Disappearing fluid with dry wheels and healthy pads deserves a proper inspection, not a shrug.
What the fix looks like
If it's wear, it's the standard brake job at your driveway: pads, hardware, rotors when they're due, and the reservoir level takes care of itself when the pistons go home. Nothing exotic.
If it's a leak, the sequence matters: find it first, fix that exact part, then bleed the system so there's no air in the lines. Which part failed decides the work, a hose, a line section, a caliper, and those vary enough car to car that I quote them flat, per car, after I've seen which piece let go. What never changes is the standard: no brake job of mine ends at 'topped it up, seems fine.' The pedal has to be hard and the level has to hold.

Can I just top up the brake fluid and keep driving?
Mechanically you can, and that's exactly the problem: the car lets you delete the warning without answering it. If the level dropped from pad wear, topping up hides the one gauge that was telling you the pads are thin, and the next message you get is grinding. If the level dropped from a leak, topping up buys you days at most, and you've spent them driving a car with a failing hydraulic system. Top up once, with the correct fluid off the cap label, as a bridge to getting it looked at. Treat any second top-up as proof of a leak. And don't fill to the brim, because a full reservoir overflows onto your paint during the next pad change.
What does a brake fluid leak actually look like?
Fresh brake fluid is nearly clear to light honey coloured, and older fluid goes tea brown. It's slick between your fingers, thinner than engine oil, with a faintly sweet chemical smell, and unlike water it doesn't evaporate off your driveway. Does the brake warning light mean low fluid or worn pads?
