Safe to drive? You're not driving anywhere, so there's no safety risk sitting still. The risk is spending money in the wrong order. Don't buy a starter or an alternator on a guess, a charging and starting test costs a fraction of either part and tells you which one it actually is. If you smell fuel, see smoke, or the battery case is hot or swollen, stop cranking and don't jump it.
Start here: is it cranking, clicking, or silent?
Before anything else, listen. What the car does when you turn the key splits the problem into completely different halves, and skipping this step is how people end up buying parts they didn't need.
Turn the key or press the button and note exactly what happens.
- Nothing at all, no dash, no lights. Power isn't reaching the car. Almost always a connection, not a component: a clamp that's finger-tight, corrosion under the clamp, or a loose ground strap.
- Dash lights come on, then one loud click. Power is arriving but the starter isn't turning. Points at the starter, its heavy cable, or the connection feeding it.
- Rapid machine-gun clicking. Not enough current. Either the connection is poor or the new battery is already flat.
- It cranks strongly but never fires. The battery side is fine, you have a fuel, spark or security problem, and the new battery was never going to fix it.
- Dash lights up with a message about the start system. The car's own logic is refusing to crank. Common after a battery change on cars that need the new battery registered.
The five things that actually cause this
In rough order of how often they turn out to be the answer.
- 1. The connection, not the battery. By a wide margin the most common. A clamp that feels tight can still be sitting on corrosion or on the insulated part of the post. The negative side is the sneaky one, the strap from the battery to the body or engine block does just as much work as the cable to the starter, and a corroded ground behaves exactly like a dead battery. Clamps should not rotate on the post by hand.
- 2. The battery was never the problem. Somebody swapped it because that's the cheap thing to try. If the real fault was a worn starter, an ignition switch, a neutral-safety or clutch switch, or a bad main cable, the new battery changed nothing. This is why the sound the car makes matters so much.
- 3. Whatever killed the old battery killed this one too. If the old battery went flat because of a parasitic draw, a module that never goes to sleep, a light staying on in the trunk, an aftermarket accessory, the new one is now sitting at the same voltage. Same story if the alternator isn't charging. New battery, same drain, same result, and you're back where you started in two days.
- 4. Wrong battery for the car. Size and type are not interchangeable. A car built for an AGM battery, most start-stop systems, will misbehave with a standard flooded one, and a battery that's physically close but not the right group can leave the clamps stretched onto the posts at an angle and making poor contact.
- 5. The car wants the new battery registered, or a relearn. Plenty of modern cars, European ones especially, expect the new battery to be coded in so the charging strategy suits it. Others lose settings when power is disconnected and need a short relearn before they behave. And on some cars, losing power entirely wakes up the immobilizer, which is its own separate problem.
What to check yourself, in five minutes
Two things are worth doing before anyone spends money, and both are free.
First, the clamps. With the car off, try to twist each terminal clamp by hand. If either one moves at all, that's very likely your whole problem. Take them off, look at the post and the inside of the clamp, a white or green powder means the contact surface is gone even though it looks connected, clean both, and put them back on properly. Then find the thick black strap running from the negative terminal to the body and to the engine, and check both ends are tight and not sitting on rust or paint.
Second, the headlight test. Turn the headlights on and watch them while someone tries to start it. Bright and steady, then a single click means the battery is fine and the problem is downstream at the starter. Lights that collapse to almost nothing mean current isn't getting through, either the connection or the battery itself. Nothing at all means no power is reaching the car.
That's the honest limit of what's worth guessing at. Past this point you're testing voltage under load, checking for a draw, and reading what the car's own modules are complaining about, and that's a meter-and-scan-tool job rather than a parts-swapping one.
What it costs to stop guessing
The expensive mistake here is buying parts in sequence until one works, a battery, then a starter, then an alternator. That's how a no-start turns into four figures when the answer was a corroded ground strap.
Testing first is dramatically cheaper than the second wrong part. The ranges below are what independent shops around here typically charge, so you can tell whether a quote you're holding is in the normal band.

Can a brand-new battery be dead out of the box?
It happens, but it's rare enough that it should be your last guess rather than your first. Batteries do sit on shelves and self-discharge, and a new one that's been stored badly can arrive low. Far more often the new battery is perfectly fine and something else is stopping the car, usually a connection that isn't making proper contact, or the same drain that flattened the old one. If a battery genuinely arrives dead, whoever sold it will normally test and swap it, so it's worth having it tested before you assume it's good and start replacing other parts.
Why does my car click once but not turn over?
One solid click with the dash lit usually means the battery is delivering power and the starter solenoid is engaging, but the motor isn't spinning. That points at the starter itself, the heavy cable feeding it, or the connection at either end. It can also be a very poor ground, which is why checking the negative strap matters even when the symptom looks like a starter. Rapid repeated clicking is a different story, that's not enough current arriving, which sends you back to the connections or the battery's actual state of charge.
Do I need to have a new battery registered?
On a lot of newer cars, yes. European models especially. The car tracks the age and type of the battery and adjusts how hard it charges it. Fit a new battery without telling the car, and it keeps using the old strategy, which at best shortens the new battery's life and at worst leaves you with warnings and a car that won't start reliably. It's a scan-tool step, not a mechanical one, and it takes minutes. Worth asking whoever fits your battery whether they do it, because plenty of quick-fit outfits don't.
Could the alternator be the real problem?
Absolutely, and it's a common one. If the alternator isn't charging properly, a new battery just becomes the next battery it drains. The tell is a car that starts fine right after the battery is fitted or charged, then gets progressively weaker over a day or two, often with a battery-shaped warning light appearing while driving. A charging system test settles it quickly and costs far less than replacing an alternator you didn't need, which is exactly the wrong-parts spiral this whole problem is famous for.
Is it worth calling someone out for this, or should I tow it?
For a car that won't start in your own driveway, having someone come to it is usually the sensible move, a tow costs money and gets you a car sitting at a shop where the diagnosis still hasn't happened yet. Most of the causes on this page are found and fixed where the car sits: connections, grounds, a battery, a starter on many vehicles. If it turns out to be something that genuinely needs a hoist, you'll at least know that before you pay to move it, instead of after.
