Safe to drive? The car drives exactly the same, which is the trap. The danger is the driver behind you on Hurontario or the 403 getting zero warning that you're stopping. Rear-end collisions are the entire reason stop lamps exist, and in Ontario driving without working ones is a ticket and the kind of defect that fails the safety inspection when a car changes hands. This is one of the smallest fixes in the book, so fix it this week, not this month. Bonus clue: on many cars the same switch releases the shifter. The five usual suspects, in order
Brake light circuits are simple, which is why this is one of the most satisfying problems to chase. Nearly every case lands on one of these:
- A bulb. The answer when one side is out. While the bulb's out of its socket, look for the other Ontario classic: green-white corrosion inside the socket from salt moisture creeping past a tired seal. A corroded socket kills new bulbs too.
- The brake light switch. The answer when everything is out. It's a small plastic switch at the top of the pedal arm that closes the circuit every time you press the pedal. It gets clicked thousands of times a winter in stop-and-go, and eventually it wears out, breaks its mount, or slips out of adjustment.
- The fuse. Thirty seconds to check, so check it before buying anything. A fuse that keeps blowing, though, is a symptom of a short, not the disease itself.
- The third brake light. On many cars the centre light runs its own bulb or LED unit, sometimes its own circuit. Outers working with a dead centre points there. LED strips also fail as a unit and get replaced as one.
- Trailer wiring. The dark horse. Aftermarket hitch wiring splices into the brake light circuits, and its connector hangs out back in the salt spray. Corrosion in that module or plug can take down lights that have nothing wrong with them.
Why all-three-out is almost always the switch
Three separate bulbs do not die on the same day. When every brake light quits at once, the fault has to live in something all three share, and on most cars that shortlist has exactly two names on it: the fuse and the brake light switch. Check the fuse first because it's free, then look hard at the switch.
One point of confusion worth clearing: your tail lights working proves nothing about your brake lights. Tail lights run off the headlight switch on a separate circuit. On older cars they even share a bulb with two filaments inside, one dim for tail, one bright for brake, and one filament can be dead while the other burns happily. So 'my lights work at night' and 'my brake lights work' are two different claims.
Testing takes one minute and no tools. Ignition on, have someone stand behind the car while you press the pedal. Alone? Back up close to your garage door at dusk and watch for the red glow in the mirror, and press hard, because a maladjusted switch sometimes only catches at the bottom of the pedal's travel.
The Ontario angle: this one gets you noticed

What fixing it involves
This is one of the smallest jobs anyone will ever call me for, and I'll say that plainly. Bulbs and pedal switches are quick work at your driveway. Corroded sockets take a cleanup or a new pigtail. The one version that turns into real tracing is wiring trouble, a chafed harness or a corroded trailer module backfeeding the circuit, and that's what a proper diagnostic visit is for.
Either way the shape of the visit is the same: I find which of the five suspects it is, tell you in plain words, give you one flat number before touching anything, and you get working lights before I leave the driveway. Why does my third brake light work when the outer two don't, or the reverse?
Because on many cars the centre high-mount light runs on its own path, sometimes its own fuse, and often its own style of bulb or a sealed LED strip. Could trailer wiring really knock out my brake lights?
Absolutely, and it's the suspect everyone forgets. When a hitch gets wired, the trailer harness splices into your brake and tail circuits, usually through a converter module tucked behind the rear trim, with a connector that dangles near the bumper. That plug lives its whole life in salt spray and slush. Corrosion in the plug or module can short the circuit, blow the fuse, or backfeed things in ways that produce genuinely weird symptoms, brake lights that flash with the turn signals included.
