The auto repair industry has a trust problem. Surveys consistently rank mechanics alongside used car salespeople as the most distrusted professionals, and honestly — some of that reputation is earned. Not by most mechanics, but by enough of them that the average Toronto driver approaches a shop visit with suspicion.
This guide is written by a mechanic. That means I'm going to give you the actual inside view — what makes a mechanic trustworthy, what the red flags look like from the customer's side, and how to protect yourself without becoming an adversarial customer who makes every interaction harder.
Car repair has a fundamental information asymmetry: the mechanic knows what's wrong, and you don't. That's not a flaw — it's the whole reason you're paying for expertise. But it creates conditions where dishonesty is easy to execute and hard to detect.
Most mechanics are honest. The problem is that a small percentage who aren't can cause enough damage to your trust that you become suspicious of everyone. The goal isn't to become an expert yourself — it's to get good at reading the signals of who's operating in good faith.
You don't need to be a car expert to ask good questions. These reveal a lot:
Google reviews are useful but imperfect. Shops can have 4.8 stars from mostly oil change customers who are perfectly happy, while hiding a pattern of upsells on larger jobs. Look for reviews that mention specific repairs and how the shop handled surprises or disagreements — those are more revealing than "fast and friendly."
Word of mouth from a neighbour or coworker who drives the same type of vehicle is worth more than any review site. When someone you know says "I've been taking my car to this person for 10 years," that's the signal you want.

When work happens in your driveway, you can watch every step. There's no black box. You see what comes off, you see what goes on, you see the condition of the parts. That level of visibility is a natural accountability mechanism — a mechanic who's going to fabricate a problem or swap unnecessary parts has to do it with the customer standing three feet away.
There's also no shop overhead to recover. A traditional shop has rent, equipment loans, a service writer taking 20% of the ticket, utilities. Those costs get recovered somewhere — sometimes through the labor rate, sometimes through volume, sometimes through selling jobs that didn't strictly need to happen. A mobile mechanic doesn't have those pressures in the same way.
None of this means every shop is dishonest or every mobile mechanic is honest. The individual matters most. But if you're choosing between two mechanics you know nothing about, the one working in your driveway with no ability to hide anything has a structural advantage on the trust side.
There's a temptation to equate the lowest quote with the most honest option. That's not reliable. A mechanic who quotes low to win the job and then finds reasons to add items once the car is apart is using price as a manipulation tool, not a trust signal. A mechanic who quotes fairly, explains clearly, and sticks to the quote is worth paying more for.
Build a relationship with one or two mechanics you trust and stay with them. The long-term value of a trustworthy relationship — someone who tells you the truth, looks out for your car, and doesn't manufacture jobs — is worth far more than chasing the cheapest quote every time.
